Colour & Light Codes

Cutters read colour. Rollers read light.

Two tools, two languages โ€” and once you speak them, any drawing becomes exactly the tool you meant. Here's the whole cheat-sheet on one page.

Rollers & Texture Plates

Roller Light Codes

How your image becomes texture

White โ€” the high point

Stands tallest on the roller โ€” so it presses deepest.

Black โ€” the baseline

Sits flat โ€” the ground your pattern rises from.

Grey โ€” every height between

Lighter = taller. One image, a whole range of heights.

Colour โ€” read as brightness

Hue is ignored; equally-light colours press the same. Want a height per colour? Use Pattern Colours.

Depth Range

Brightness โ†’ height. Default range 0โ€“2mm โ€” and you set both ends yourself.

1.5mm
Mid grey
1.0mm
Black
0.0mmFLAT

2mm is a starting point, not a ceiling. Under 0.5mm barely shows. Go deeper for bold, chunky patterns and thicker mediums โ€” pottery and quilted pockets want 3mm+. It's only tall, thin features that turn fragile when you push the depth up.

โœ“

Give lines some body

Keep every line at least 0.5mm wide at final roller size. Hairlines soften away in printing, then again when you press.

โœ“

Design it to tile

A roller is a loop โ€” the left edge meets the right. Build it seamless and the join disappears. Not seamless? You get a clean cut, not a smeared join.

Three Modes

Pick the one that matches your image.

Artwork ยท shapes exactly as drawn

Greyscale or line art, kept crisp. Brightness sets the height.

Pattern Colours ยท a height per colour

Solid, unshaded colours โ€” each gets its own height. Drag to reorder.

Depth Map ยท photos & AI

Smooth tones go straight to height. Run photos through DepthPrep first.

Invert ยท works on all three

One click flips raised โ†” recessed. Deboss or emboss, same artwork.

How your colours become cuts & imprints

Black fill โ€” solid imprint

A solid black area presses in as a flat, solid impression.

Red fill โ€” internal blade, cuts through

A solid red area becomes its own blade and cuts through โ€” hanging holes, open centres.

Grey fill โ€” multi-depth

The darker the grey, the deeper the imprint. One shape, many depths โ€” see the depth chart.

White โ€” detail on a fill

On its own, white is empty space. But white on a black fill carves detail back in โ€” lines inside a solid impression.

Multi-Depth

Grey = how deep it presses. The darker the grey, the deeper it goes.

Mid grey
Half depth

Stick to these two greys โ€” #404040 and #808080. Paler greys are a gamble: whether they register depends on how much black is elsewhere in the drawing, so the same pale grey can work in one design and vanish from another. If a grey area hasn't shown up in the preview, darken it a step and rebuild.

โœ“

Every grey area is its own island

White all the way around it โ€” that's how each depth stays its own step.

โœ“

The whole piece needs a black outline

The outline is the cutter's shape โ€” without it, the app sees loose shapes.

One drawing, the whole set

Matching Insert Cutters & Mirrored Pair.

Matching Insert Cutters

Flip one toggle and every black pocket and red hole gets its own little cutter, printed beside the frame. Cut the inlays from a contrasting colour and they drop straight in.

Mirrored Pair

Both orientations in the one print. A finished pair of earrings, not two separate jobs.
